The decision to relocate for a job is often met with a mix of excitement and trepidation. It's a leap into the unknown, where the promise of career advancement and personal development beckons. I took such a step moving to Ahmedabad for job opportunities at TTEC, and it's profoundly impacted my life.
Let me share insights from my journey, reflecting on the initial challenges and the vibrant life I've discovered in Ahmedabad.
The appeal of living in Ahmedabad
Why was moving to Ahmedabad interesting for me? I feel like it’s a safe city for several reasons: strong community ties, good police presence, and well-maintained public spaces. I notice that people look out for one another here. That puts me at ease.
Getting around the city is easy, too. I can take an auto-rickshaw to work. It’s fast and reliable. Buses are also available, so commuting can be quite simple.
Also, the low cost of living in Ahmedabad and its affordable housing make it a great place to live and work. I’ve found a nice apartment that isn’t very expensive. It’s comfortable, and I’m happy to call it home.
Overcoming relocation challenges through support
The transition to a new, unfamiliar city is never without its hurdles. First, I faced a language barrier here because I’m not very familiar with Gujarati, the most widely spoken language. While I knew Hindi and English, there were moments when I couldn’t fully understand conversations, especially outside of work.
But, my colleagues at TTEC were really kind and understanding. They made sure to speak more Hindi or English when I was around.
More importantly, they also taught me common Gujarati phrases. They encouraged me to try speaking in Gujarati, even if I made mistakes. They would patiently correct me and explain the meaning of words.
This helped me slowly gain confidence and start using the language in everyday situations. Over time, I got over the language barrier. My colleagues’ positive attitude and willingness to help made me feel more comfortable.
The kindness and camaraderie of my coworkers turned obstacles into opportunities to learn and connect. The initial discomfort of acclimating to a new environment gave way to a feeling of belonging.
A TTEC community that connects with you
And it wasn’t just the language barrier that my TTEC colleagues helped me with. When I first moved to Ahmedabad, I was nervous and felt homesick. Being far away from my family was a challenge.
But on my first day, my team welcomed me so warmly. One of my colleagues, Vinita, came over to chat with me during lunch. She asked about my hometown and shared stories of his own experience moving to Ahmedabad. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone.
The next day, a few teammates invited me for tea at a nearby stall after work. It became a habit for us, and those small tea breaks helped me connect with them on a personal level. We talked about everything from food to weekend plans.
Another colleague, Nayana, even invited me to her home for dinner one weekend, where I met her family. These little acts of kindness, like sharing meals and spending time together outside work, helped me feel more at home in Ahmedabad. Over time, I found myself enjoying the city and the people at TTEC who have become my second family.
Growing in a new environment
Relocating to Ahmedabad for work turned out to be really good for me in ways I didn’t expect. For one, it made me more independent.
I had to figure things out on my own, whether it was finding a place to live, navigating the city, managing my own expenses… basically handling anything without relying on my family. I became more confident in making decisions, both at work and in my personal life.
Being in a new environment also helped me become more adaptable. At TTEC, I worked with people from different backgrounds. That pushed me to learn how to communicate better and be more open to different perspectives.
The independence and adaptability I’ve gained have done wonders for my career too. I was completely new to the processes I had to follow at work. It was challenging at first, but I worked hard and eventually won several top performer awards and client awards with TTEC.
After a few months, I was given the role of mentor and I got to train a few new batches of employees, many of whom became top performers themselves. This makes me so proud! And because of my dedication to work, I was promoted to Team Coach and currently work as a Service Delivery Specialist for my team.
This experience has boosted my confidence and has shown me that I can handle tough situations on my own. I can face challenges head-on, adapt quickly, and trust myself more. It’s been a wonderful journey of self-discovery to find a strong, very capable person within myself.
A new, balanced life in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad has been good for both my professional and personal life. In Nagpur where I’m from, life is quite slow and relaxed, but there aren’t as many job openings. Plenty of career opportunities in Ahmedabad are available in different industries, but the lifestyle and work culture is still quite unhurried.
There’s a good work-life balance here. Most people finish work by 5 or 6 PM, which lets them spend time with family and friends. I’ve been able to explore Ahmedabad’s beautiful parks, local markets, and cultural spots.
Overall, Ahmedabad’s mix of good work opportunities and plentiful free time lets me enjoy a very well-rounded life – fulfilled and less stressed. That’s why it’s one of the best places in India to work in.
Navigating the move: insights and tips for relocation
While relocating to Ahmedabad can present challenges, there’s plenty to gain. You just have to prepare yourself properly. Start by researching the city, its neighborhoods, transportation, and culture.
Research the best location for you to live. Find somewhere affordable, close to where you work and near other establishments you think you need access to. Shops, parks, restaurants, whatever you enjoy most.
Connect with your colleagues. This will help you adjust to work and life in a new city faster and better. This is easier when you join a company like TTEC that cares about the employee experience.
My colleagues introduced me to the best places to eat, shop, and visit. They’ve invited me to local festivals. They really create a feeling of community.
Immerse yourself in the local culture. This will make you feel more connected and less like an outsider. On weekends, I explored different places in Ahmedabad like Sabarmati Ashram, ISKCON Temple, Science City, Kankaria Lake and more.
