Emergency Contact
There are a number of ways of ensuring your safety when you move to a new country. The first best step is to ensure you have the emergency phone number for the country. Here in Ireland, there are 2 primary numbers we call in the event of an emergency. These are:
- 999
- 112
When to call 999 / 112?
These are the 2 numbers we call when someone is seriously injured in need of hospitalisation, or in the event of an emergency. By dialing either of these numbers you can get through to any of the following services:
- Guardian
- Ambulance Services
- Fire Brigade
- Coast Guard
- Mountain Rescue
When to call 116?
This is a number well known all over the EU. It facilitates access to Helplines for the following situations:
- 116 000 For Missing Children HotLine
- 116 111 For Child Helplines
- 116 006 For Victims of Crime
- 116 123 For Emotional Support Helpline
A helpful tip:
If you are moving here from abroad, it is always a good idea to have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) Contact in your phone. An ICE contact is the person who you would most like to have contacted on your behalf in the event of a personal emergency. Often an ICE contact is a family member or a close friend. Simply put the name of the person in your phone after the ICE prefix, so it would look like “ICE Angela”.

When you move into a new house, it’s a good idea to make a copy of your house key and give a spare copy to a friend in the event you are locked out or there’s no one inside.Join us and thrive
